Global REIT Investment Challenge
Contest Rules and Regulations

The Global REIT Investment Challenge is free of charge and open to university students, professionals and institutional groups. Registration is currently open and will continue throughout the fall and spring semesters. The challenge consists of three rounds: qualifying, advanced and final. Click "Registration" button to sign up for the competition or visit the official website  www.reitchallenge.org/register  to fill in the registration information.

  • Accepting registration since September 16, 2019. All candidates begin in the qualifying round and have the flexibility of choosing when to start the challenge according to their own schedule.

  • The qualifying round includes two parts: “Online REIT Exam” and “Investment Simulation”. The qualified candidates will receive two respective professional certificates  issued by the organizers. 

  • The Online REIT Exam takes the form of multiple choice test, and the players can take the exam at any time. 

  • Investment simulation requires players to use the real-time financial data to invest in REIT stocks. Any player who meets the promotion criteria for the simulation within minimum period of four weeks, will qualified for the promotion.

  • Although the qualifying round include only the individual competitions, the challenge now accepts group applications. It requires that at least one player in the group must obtain individual promotion qualification in the qualifying round for the team to participate in the group competition in Advanced round.

Advanced

  • The Advanced round is divided into individual competitions and team competitions. All team members will be required to participate in individual competition and at least one member is qualified.

  • The content of the advanced round will case study research related to real estate. The research question is assigned by the organization committee. Each participant submits a report using PowerPoint format. (Maximum 20 pages for individual player and maximum 40 pages for each group).

  • The judge panel will select 10 individuals and 10 groups to the winners into the final round according the research quality. 

  • There are two promotion opportunities
    FALL Event:      December 2019
    SPRING Event:  May 2020

  • Individuals or teams who excel in any of the advanced competition events can directly receive the winning prize certificates and the admission pass to the final round. Individuals or teams who have not advanced to the final in the Fall can participate in the Spring Promotions.

Final

  • The final round competition is also divided into individual competitions and team competitions. Individuals or teams in the finals will be required to hold the "Advance Pass" from the either the fall promotion or the spring promotion. 

  • The Final competition is a “Case Presentation”. Participants will be required to create and upload a video of presentations (maximum 15 minutes for individuals and maximum 25 minutes for groups) based on the case analysis submitted at the Advanced Round.

  • There are two final competitions:

          FALL Event:     December 2019

          SPRING Event: May 2020

  • The finalists will have the opportunity to work with a mentor and to prepare the final presentation in final championship challenge. The winners will be selected by the judge panel based on performance in simulation and case presentation.

Awards

  • Global REIT Challenge will select a champion, the second place winners, the third place winners, and finalist for both individual competition and group competition based on returns on performance of investment simulations and judges’ comments on case studies.

  • Awardees in the final round will receive certificate,a cash bonus, and the opportunity to study abroad.

  • All the finalists will have opportunities to enroll into the mentorship program and get advice from industry leaders and university professors; to get interview for internship or full-time job.

  • All the qualified participants in this challenge will be provided with participation certificates issued by Asian Real Estate Research Institute.

  • Participants registered before Sep. 30, 2019 will be eligible to invite for final round of interview leading for a 10-week paid internship at Credit Suisse Asia Pacific Equities division.

 

Rules for the Qualifying Round

1. Structure:

The content of the qualifying round include two parts: “Online REIT Exam” and “Investment Simulation".

  • Online REIT Exam: There are 50 multiple-choice questions with 100 points total. The exam aims to test basic knowledge of REITs and other topics from the relevant sections of the official website www.reitchallenge.org.

  • Investment Simulation: players trade the US REIT stocks on EquitySim, an investment simulation platform. Players will learn how to investment USD $100,000 paper money on EquitySim. The players can only trade on selected REIT stocks and benchmark market index fund assigned by the organizer. Investing other securities such as ETFs, bonds, options, currencies, non-REIT stocks are considered to be in violation. 

 

2. Registration:

  • Registration requirements: Qualifying round is an individual competition. In addition to graduate and undergraduate students, working professionals are welcome to participate.

  • Signing Up: Fill in the registration form on the official website: www.reitchallenge.org/registerThe organizing committee will send you the account information for the online trading platform within 24 hours via email. Please make sure your name is spelled correctly on the website. Please verify your email address after filling in the registration information and check the mailbox (including the trash) regularly to avoid missing important information. 

 

Registration Period: rolling, September 16, 2019 - April 12, 2020

• Registration Fee: free for students

 

3. Promotion rules:

To be promoted to the Advanced round, a participate must obtain the promotion qualification passes from both “Online REIT Exam” and “Investment Simulation”. Then the participate submit “Advanced Round Individual Competition Application Form” and CV to service@AsianRERI.org The organizing committee will approve the applicant after review. (Applicant’s CV will be used to compile in a “Resume Book” to be distributed to the potential recruiters).

  • Online REIT Exam: The test contains 50 multiple-choice questions that consist of 100 points total. It is open book and without time-limit. The test is password-protected on the official website. Once a player registered the competition, she will receive the password. Each player can only submit the exam twice per day. Players will obtain the promotion qualification only if they have scored 90 points or more. Each player has unlimited time to answer the exam questions during the Qualifying round period.

  • Investment Simulation: The host will build an account each Monday with USD 1,000,000 investing all in the benchmark index fund - S&P 500 index fund (ticker: SPY). If a player’s portfolio performance - Sharpe Ratio exceeds that of the SPY benchmark fund, she is qualified for the promotion. Screenshots showing the performance needs to be saved.

 

4. Certification

Players who pass the “Online REIT Exam” or “Investment Simulation” can obtain the corresponding certificate issued by the Asian Real Estate Research Institute. The e-Cert is free of charge; for paper certificate it is USD $20 /certificate (the paper certificate contains steel stamp of the Asian Real Estate Research Institute and signature of the directors).

 

 

Rules for the Advanced Round

The Advanced Round will be held in the form of "Individual competitions" and "Group competitions".

 

1. Individual competitions:

  • Requirements: Participants who apply for and qualify for the qualifying round (see Promotion rules in the qualifying round).

  • Competition fee: Free for students

  • Competition schedule:

    • Fall Advancement: December 6-13, 2019

    • Spring Advancement: May 1-8, 2020

  • Content of the competition: Case study is assigned by the committee. Each participant submits a report using PowerPoint format with no more than 20 pages

  • Promotion rules: The judge panel will select 10 top performers as the winner to the final round based on the quality of the case study.

 

2. Group competition:

  • Requirements: The group competition will open registration on September 16, 2019. All team members will be required to participate in individual competition and at least one member is qualified. Each team consists of 3 to 5 students and one faculty advisor. The team needs to fill out the “Advanced Round Group Competition Application Form” (including CVs from each team member). To complete the form, the faculty advisor needs to provide a recommendation comments and sign the form. The completed application form will be scanned and email to service@AsianRERI.org. The judges will approve the applicant after review. (Applicant’s CV will be used to compile in a “Resume Book” to be distributed to the potential recruiters).

  • Competition fee: Free for student teams

  • Timeline:

    • Fall Advancement: December 6-13, 2019

    • Spring Advancement: May 1-8, 2020

  • Structure: Case study is assigned by the committee. Each team submits a report using PowerPoint format with no more than 40 pages.

  • Promotion rules: The judge panel will select 10 top performers as the winning teams to promote into the final round based on the quality of the case study.

 

3. Certification

  • Top performers will receive award certificates. The e-Cert is free of charge; for paper certificate it is USD $20 /certificate (the paper certificate contains steel stamp of the Asian Real Estate Research Institute and signature of the directors).

Rules for the Final Round

The finals will be held in the form of "Individual competitions" and "Group competitions".

  • Timeline:

    • Fall Final: December 20-30, 2019

    • Spring Final: May 16-22, 2020

  • Competition fee: free for students.

  • Structure: presentation of the case studyParticipants will be required to create and upload a video of presentations (no more than 15 minutes for individuals and no more than 25 minutes for groups) based on the case analysis submitted at the Advanced Round. The presentation video should include a presentation of the speaker and PowerPoint.

  • Judge Rules: judges will recommend the winters according to the quality of the case report and presentation.

Remarks

  • Participants must compete and join related activities by themselves, and obey the arrangement of the organizing committee, otherwise they will be disqualified.

  • Team members cannot be replaced anytime after a team’s formation. If there are special circumstances, the team needs to submit an application to the organizing committee, and after approval, pay USD $10 fee to replace the member.

  • If the player has any suspicion of false registration, forgery of information, or violations of other competition rules, the organizing committee has the right to verify the violation after the event is confirmed by the organizing committee. If confirmed, the competitor will be disqualified.

  • The organizer is dedicated to make the competition run smoothly. However, the organizer will not be responsible for the miscalculations of rankings and investment returns for contestants affected by any uncontrollable factors such as system breakdown or data delays.

  • Contestants are responsible for privacy of their own personal accounts. The organizer will not be responsible for any losses in account due to losses, leaks, or hacks of passwords.

  • The organizer reserves the rights to make adjustment to the processes, rules, incentives, and announcements of the competition and will inform contestants as soon as possible. The organizer reserves the power of interpretation of the rules and the power to edit the rules.

  • If the competition is interrupted and thus under abnormal operation, the organizer reserves the rights to settle the issue and pause the simulation or halt transactions.
